The Flu season is here and there have been new predictions for the Novel Influenza A (H1N1) Virus, formerly known as the Swine Flu.  It is very important that you use precautions for infection control at home.  Here are current guidelines for schools from the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

  1. Students staying home when sick.  Those with Flu-like symptoms and a fever equal to or greater than 100 degrees should stay home at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever.
  2. Routinely clean areas that are touched often (doorknobs, faucets, handrails etc.).
  3. Stress hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.  Avoid coughing or sneezing into hands, use a tissue or shirt sleeve if no tissue is available.  Avoid touching eyes, mouth or nose with hands.
  4. If a child has a fever greater than 100 degrees and showing influenza-like symptoms that they are seen by a doctor.
  5. Temporary closures of schools are local decisions that will not be necessary in most circumstances.

It is very important that if a family member in the home has an influenza-like illness or symptoms, that you contact the OSD Student Health Center at 580-622-4922 for voice or TTY, 866-289-2322 Video Phone  immediately so that we can monitor your child closely while here on campus.

The Oklahoma School for the Deaf serves the entire state which places our children at a high risk of being exposed to such viruses due to the residential setting.  It is very important to us that we keep our children healthy and free of illness.

Influenza-like symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhea & vomiting.  With the Seasonal flu and H1N1 you may not experience all symptoms.

There is a vaccine to be available.  We will not give that vaccine at school.  You will need to contact your County Health Department regarding the H1N1 vaccine.

Below is a website that has an American Sign Language Video discussing the H1N1 Virus (formerly known as the Swine Flu) and Hand Washing.
