The Oklahoma School for the Deaf, for the third straight year,
is offering a summer academic camp for deaf and hard of hearing
students from across the state. Our high school camp includes
ages 11-17, while the elementary camp is for ages 6-10. Both
camps focus on improving reading skills and social development.
The teachers are from OSD's own fantastic staff who have helped
the popularity of this camp grow tremendously. Volunteers from
near by colleges and as well as parents also help make the camp
a success.
The camp theme for 2007 "who, what, when, where,
and why". This year 70 high school applications, and 35
elementary applications were received by the deadline date which
more than doubles last years camp size. Morning classes will
focus on academic improvement, while afternoon groups will enjoy
art, drama, computer/photography, and recreational activities.
This year we are adding an afternoon of interaction with the
Rotary Club Leadership camp members. This will be an opportunity
for two different cultures to share ideas and skills with each
other. Some of the field trips taken will include Arbuckle
Wilderness, Turner Falls, Lazer Zone, and Chickasaw National
Park.
Learning, social development, and fun are all in
store for those who attend. For more information about the camp
check out the website on OSD's home page, or contact Brent
Behrens, camp director.
