Occupational Training Opportunities
for the Deaf
The OTOD program was established to
help Deaf and Hard of Hearing students prepare for
the competitive job market after graduation. OTOD
students spend a 3-hour block every week day working on a
trainee basis in the community. In the beginning,
interpreters accompany all students to work and
assist in developing job skills, training and work
ethics; however, at the employer's discretion, the
students may work without assistance at any time.
The program allows students to experience two to
three employment opportunities each school year.
In addition to a half day of
on-the-job training, the students also attend a half
day of regular academic classes. A special course,
Independent Living Skills, is provided to offer
practical experiences in banking, budgeting of
income, apartment hunting, reading and understanding
bills, and other consumer skills. Each student
opens and maintains a checking and a savings account
at a local bank throughout the year.
