Jamie Wilson

Deaf Mentor

Jamie Wilson is currently teaching High School English at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf, Sulphur, Oklahoma. She was involved with and responsible for setting up the Deaf Education Program in 1993 at Ponca City Public Schools in the mainstream setting. Jamie has had three educational backgrounds- being an oral student at Jane Brooks School for the Deaf, Chickasha, Oklahoma, mainstreamed at Apache Public Schools and now as a teacher using American Sign Language at a residential school for the deaf, Sulphur, Oklahoma. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from East Central University with extra credit hours in Reading Specialist. She considers her greatest accomplishment to be selected as one of the fifteen teachers for the Oklahoma Writing Project from the University of Oklahoma. That honor led to a series of workshops as a presenter around the state, including Norman, Ardmore, Tulsa, Altus, Lawton, Ada, Edmond and Sulphur, and several workshops for OSD. Jamie has 28 years teaching experience, two at Ponca City and twenty-six at Oklahoma School for the Deaf. Her goal is to teach her students to be successful, contributing members of society and always honor the older Deaf community.  Jamie is a proud Deaf Mentor for the Oklahoma School for the Deaf’s Family Engagement and Early Language Support, FEELS (formerly ECCO) program. She enjoys helping hearing families with Deaf & Hard of Hearing babies and toddlers gain a wealth of lifelong experiences as a Deaf person passing on the great resources and having the passion of teaching American Sign Language to the hearing families is the greatest honor one can bestow.  Communication between a hearing parent and deaf child is so important to her.  Just like how she feels with her hearing daughter as well.  Learning ASL at the age of 18 gave her the best of both worlds and she wishes she had that with her parents to have a closer relationship with them.  It is healing to her  knowing that the bonds of communication will always grow in the FEELS families.

Jamie resides in Sulphur, Oklahoma.  She has a twenty-five year old daughter, Katie, who graduated from Cameron University in Elementary Education.  Her daughter is in her second year teaching third grade with Lawton Public Schools.
