Director of Family and Early Childhood

Petra (Teel) Gatzemeyer is the Director of the Family and Early Childhood Services Department at OSD. She has worked in early intervention and early childhood for the past 20 years in a variety of roles. Petra started her career as a classroom teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students in Oklahoma City Public Schools but left that position to attend Gallaudet University. After returning to Oklahoma she accepted a position as the early childhood educator at the OSD preschool satellite in Broken Arrow. The last 14 years, Petra has been working with families as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consultant for Oklahoma’s early intervention agency, Sooner Start. She has also worked as a Parent Advisor for Project ECCO (now called FEELS).  Petra has an undergraduate degree in Deaf Education from the University of Tulsa and a graduate degree in Family Centered Early Education from Gallaudet University. In addition to working with families and young children, Petra is also an adjunct instructor at Gallaudet University in their Infant Family and Toddlers Certificate Program and has several years of teaching experience at the university level for various courses related to Deaf Education. Petra also is a Certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, holding credentials as an Auditory Verbal Therapist.
