Educational Interpreter

Educational Interpreter

Oklahoma public schools must comply with Senate Bill 1328, known as the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter for the Deaf Act. This critical legislation helps ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing students have qualified interpreters to support their education.

With funding from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD) provides comprehensive training and support for educational interpreters at no cost to interpreters or schools. Our services include:

  • Workshops and Professional Development: Regularly scheduled training opportunities designed to help interpreters enhance their skills and stay current with best practices.

  • Mentoring: One‑on‑one and small group mentoring for educational interpreters seeking to improve proficiency and confidence in classroom settings.

  • Educational Interpreter Registry: OSD manages and maintains the statewide registry of educational interpreters, supporting compliance with state requirements.

  • EIPA CEU Program: Administration of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Continuing Education Unit (CEU) program to help interpreters meet ongoing professional development requirements.

  • Resident Interpreter Program: A unique immersion experience hosted on the OSD campus, providing in‑depth, hands‑on practice and feedback in a real educational environment.

Through these services, OSD is dedicated to raising the standard of educational interpreting statewide and helping ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing students receive equitable access to instruction and communication in Oklahoma classrooms.
